A sand ceremony, sometimes called a ‘unity sand ceremony’, is a lovely option to consider for any occasion that marks two or more people coming together. For this reason, it’s a particularly great choice for weddings (working especially well with blended families), vow renewals and adoption or naming ceremonies with children old enough to take part.
Each participant has a vessel containing a different coloured sand, which they take turns in pouring into a central vessel like a vase, bottle or special frame.
Once the sand has been poured like this the colours cannot be separated again. Thus, not only does it make a beautiful keepsake of the day, but also it symbolises the permanent joining together of those who took part in the sand ceremony: we cannot be undone.
