A sand ceremony, sometimes called a ‘unity sand ceremony’, is a lovely option to consider for any occasion that marks two or more people coming together. For this reason, it’s a particularly great choice for weddings (working especially well with blended families) or vow renewals.
Each participant has a vessel containing a different coloured sand. You can choose the colours of the sands to represent you in some way – either because of the symbolism of the colour or just because it’s your favourite! You can even choose sands from different places you come from or that are special to you. Participants then take turns in pouring the sands into a central vessel like a vase, bottle or special frame.
Once the sand has been poured like this the colours cannot be separated again. Thus, not only does it make a beautiful keepsake of the day, but also it symbolises the permanent joining together of those who took part in the sand ceremony: we cannot be undone.
